Amazing value for a player that brings all the elements that Bertuzzi brings. I thought for sure the arbitrator would have come in close to 4M/season...all players are feeling the pinch of the pandemic I guess! Agree with your comment though; hope the relationship between team/player wasn't damaged during this process.

Hmm. Unsure about this - great value for Bertuzzi's production, but it might be that the organization doesn't value him as highly as I thought. Arbitration is a messy business though, and the arb opting for the organization's number is worrisome - never good to sign after airing dirty laundry. Hope as you say Jeremy that all is well between management and the player.

Thanks for that. The optimistic side tells me this is a short term deal while the GM/owner get a feel for next year’s economics. So many things are in the air right now

I am really hoping that Yzerman sees what Bertuzzi brings. I believe he does, and that this is more the result of a league scrambling to figure out numbers for the coming year.

Thanks so much for dropping in and commenting!

The process is not what it use to be with teams bad mouthing players. Now i would imagine is all about stats and comparable players. 20 years ago they didn't have advanced stats and all that. I think it's all numbers now and no personal attacks.

Bertuzzi's value is more felt in the playoffs. He's one of those annoying Marchand-like players you want on your team in the playoffs when the play intensifies and the checking gets tighter. He's a big undervalued now since this team doesnt make the playoffs..

Was really hoping they were going to sign both Bertuzzi and Mantha to 6 year deals, hope there isn't tension between Bertuzzi and the organization and a long term deal gets worked out next offseason.

I thought they would, for sure on both. The league is going to look different once all the financials are in. They finally released how much “the bubble” cost (around 90 million) but final figures on TV revenues haven’t been published. If season ticket sales are down, that’s even more of a strain on cash flow. This 1 year deal may help everyone to get a sense of where everything will land. I’m not thrilled with it, but things are strange

I did an update on estimated post season losses on the blog. Roughly 236 million lost (could end up being more). Yzerman and others are going to have to be careful with funds for a bit.

I like Bert's deal, he is definitely worth over $4M though.

I don't think Tyler Johnson will come to Detroit unless he knows that Stevie will flip him to a contender. I don't know if the Rangers would want him for 4 yrs even at $2.5M.......and that NTC is troublesome. Would be nice if they did.

$3.5m is a pretty team-friendly number for the Red Wings. Was expecting it to come in a smidge higher than that. He’s easily worth what the arbitrator gave him.

That said, I feel like a lot of you guys are crazy overrating Tyler Bertuzzi.

Don't get me wrong; I like him too. He’s a good player. He looks good on a scoring line. He drives offense. He’s got a great attitude. But production-wise I think he’s very clearly a second line quality talent. Maybe fringe first liner. He’s also almost 26. It’s very unlikely he’s ever going to be significantly better than he is right now.

In short, I think Bertuzzi is the kind of guy any team would love to have in a top-six support role, but not a guy you build around or sign to 5+ year deals.

Hey all, we’ve talked a bit in the last few posts about finances. The AHL is pushing the proposed start date back to February. I’ll expand on that a bit next post, but if I’m an AHL guy I’d be heading overseas. The SHL season ends at the end of April at this point. At least get some guarantees

One thing worth mentioning is that is that most European elite leagues have strict import caps on the number of foreign (or at least non-European) players per team to protect the local talent pool, and a lot of teams are probably already operating at or near the limit.

There might be a little more wiggle room for European AHLers to return to their home countries and play, but I would imagine the vast majority of American and Canadian AHLers would be out of luck.

For sure, the KHL has the same issues. Some kids find a loophole citing heritage and can come in on those teams. Once the SHL/KHL are filled up, there are still a lot of leagues to go a try out (Scotland, France, etc). They love getting AHL guys

This is poor management. In the story they admit that they knew about the incident when they drafted him. With a lack of picks, some more due diligence would have seen them avoid this. Their highest draft pick this year was this 4th rounder.

Everyone, I’m so sorry. I’m a little buried and wading my way through. I will have a new post soon. Sorry for the delay
